Permanent Impairment Allowance (PIA)

Post by Dove96 on Thu 20 Mar 2014, 13:18

If you are granted PIA does this reduce your SISIP LTD accordingly?

Is PIA a taxable benefit as I believe it replaces the Exceptional Incapacity Allowance which is non taxable ...if taxable I assume it affects LTD payments. If not then would reason no it does not. Of course just my thoughts not certain.

I just got off the phone to SISIP.
I asked if receiving PIA would effect my LTD payments. I was told the payments remain the same.
I told her that the letter states I will receive a T4 showing it as income. She reiterated: "VA payments do not effect SISIP payments"

SISIP cannot deduct PIA without the NVC being among the list of other income sources to be deducted. And even that would have had to have been done back in 2006. And just for clarity, PIA does not reduce amounts paid under the ELB program either.

Thanks all.
My CM contacted me in January to fill out the application and WOW I received the paperwork today that it was granted!
I didn't do any research before because I didn't think it would be granted.

Hey Dove,

Good to hear you made out with that!  cheers . Your January timeframe also guides me as I put in for the same thing a short time ago.
But like you, I don't expect nothing... anything else is gravy. pinger.

Rigger, are you getting the PIA supp as well? Because if you get PIA and PIA supp, the combined minimum monthly amount is $1630/month, while the maximum EIA is only $1385. Yes the EIA is tax free, but if you deduct 15% for taxes from minimum $1630, it comes out to the exact same amount as the max EIA, $1385. So the way I see it, it would be better financially for you to request an increase to your PIA along with the PIA supp, because chances are, you will not be given the maximum EIA.

And while one of the recent recommendations was to extend PIA supp to those getting EIA, at this point, it is merely a non binding recommendation.
