Post by MommyB on Wed 21 May 2014, 11:26

I have just gotten approval from VAC for PIA and TPI
DO I have to notify SISIP?
Does this now get deducted from my monies from SISIP??

Call you VAC Case Manager now! It is better to ask the source now instead of paying them back down the road.

I have a call into her. Just takes FOREVER to get a call back
I have looked at VAC and SISIPs sites and can't find anything
about having a $ for $ deduction for PIA or TPI.

Con grats MommyB, IM not fast enough to respond like you where told 100% YOURS and the good thing its for life not age 65 like LTD, so you do not have to report it to anyone, you will get a t4 each year. Here the good thing about being demed TPI, should Manulife start playing games with your monthly LTD payments,YOU are now in the event they say they wont cover you anymore, you AUTOMATICALLY go on ELB, it will say that in your letter, so you have now have been secured either way, so take a deep breath if ltd decideds to stop you then go on elb dollar for dollar so you wont loose a thing. What you have done has now secured your future, and now in the drivers seat for once. RUCKSACK 031 OVER BUT NEVER OUT.

Further to the above info from rucksack...

Here is the link to what is deductible compliments of the Veteran Ombudsman Office

https://www.cfmws.com/en/AboutUs/SISIPFS/Insurance/Pages/Long-Term-Disability.aspx

Basically it states that anything that is NOT EMPLOYMENT income is not deducted. As per the designation PIA is an "allowance" so not deductible from LTD.

Just a reminder, and I always forget about it too, TPI is the "designation" to access PIA.

Being deemed TPI is also required for the approval EELB, which is the term for extending ELB until 65 (or life, if the requested changes are made), if SISIP drops the ball. In fact, if ELB is automatic for anyone collecting PIA, I cannot see to many people choosing to stay on SISIP, if the recommended changes are made, unless the SISIP policy is changed as well. I could see happening, but not right away.

Well according to the HoC website, the committee is still writing the draft report on the NVC, so with the MP's pending summer break, it is not likely going to be finished, passed up the chain, and acted upon, until at least the Fall.

Hey MommyB, Like propat said, apply for the pia supplement as well. They are both for life. The policy documents for pia and the supp are here... http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/about-us/policy/download/1092 . I am old pa, and tpi elb'd until 65 but my pia got denied...  scratch  Maybe if I fired Johnny Walker Red and the wife my pia would get approved.
Not to overwhelm you, and everyones sit. is different, but be aware of cpp(d) and it's ramifications when you turn 65. Echo bearing 080, range 1500 km, standby... apply, apply, apply.

I was told recently that the PIA is only good till age 65 according to the NVC.

However the PIA was for life if under the older Pension Act, which was referred to as EIA.

Propat, I heard the Veterans Ombudsman stating on radio show CHML on the weekend that one of his purposals was to extend PIA for life, I am no sure its for life right now, I do know that if you have EIA or have ever gotten EIA you cant get PIA, OH nice job on the RC form!
