PSHCP

Post by Guest on Mon 23 Mar 2015, 12:33

Just received a bulletin from PSHCP, and their rates are increasing, and if I read it right this increase is the first of a four year contribution phase in-period.

I also received a CF pension adjustment showing the extra amount withheld on my pension.

Has anybody else received this ? as this is news to me.

Yes, tis true. The news has been out for some time. Not good for pocket books but still a better deal than I can get with plans like the blue cross.

Yes the monthly premiums are going up but as of this year and going forward their is no annual deduction on first time use each year.

So it is even more important that everyone remembers to claim their health insurance premiums and dental premiums on their yearly taxes.

I use my Pension Statement to verify my premiums I pay every year. For example for 2014 I paid $700 in premiums and I'm going to claim it under my yearly medical deductions.

Just received an application form for PSHCP from my new CM. Was wondering if anyone has an idea of the rates? I'm interested in prescription and dental. I am married with 5 children under 12. No health issues for anyone in the family except myself.

Thanks Recon031!
5 kids?? I guess I'm not the only one people are calling crazy haha!
What does that $130 a month give you?
Is that like 80% of dental and prescriptions for everyone?
We pay out of pocket for everything right now and I'm trying to decide if PSHCP would save us some money.

Basically, they have stolen our CPI increases for the last several years. Comparing my Apr 2015 deposit against yesterdays deposit, the actual amount has only increased by $1.42. I can't look back any farther, but the 2015 increase was only several cents over the previous year. So since 2014, my CF pension has only increased by less than 2 dollars.

Recon, you need to check into your dental coverage. That rate is for the pensioner and one family member. It is $47.96 for a pensioner and more than one family member. Here's the link:

https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/services/benefit-plans/pensioner-dental-services-plan/pensioners-dental-services-plan-contribution-rates.html

Here is the link for the PSHCP. Go to Appendix C for pensioners.

Don't forget to claim the provincial tax on the premiums.  For Ontario, it is 8%.  If you call the pension office, 1-800-267-0325, you can get a letter for the medical and dental plan that states your annual premium and tax paid.  Once registered, you are supposed to get the letters yearly.

By-the-way, this is the third of 4 increases to the PSHCP premium.  They eliminated the annual deductible in 2015 so if your pharmacy charged you for it, I'd be taking my receipt to the pharmacy and demanding a refund!

Here's the link to that bulletin from Oct 14 explaining both changes:

The rates for PHSCP are going up because of two reasons. One, from time to time they look at how much the plan is costing them. And then they raise them because these plans are expensive to run. And the biggest factor right now is that several years ago, the feds announced that they would cover less of the cost of the plan for retired members. As members of PHSCP were were paying 25% of the premium. This has been going up and will go up to 50% in April 2018.

The plan is beneficial if you or your family have high medical costs. So I think I pay about $1200 a year for myself and spouse and it generally gives me back more than I pay. But you have to check out what you normally pay in a year without the plan and go from there. If you find your medical costs for what they will pay for are going up, you can always get in the plan...might be a 2 or 3 month waiting period...not sure.

Dental plan is pretty good. I generally get more paid out that I pay in for my spouse and I.
