Refugees find work at The Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre

Post by Guest on Wed 09 Dec 2015, 17:39

Here is something positive towards what refugees can offer to Canada an Veterans ;

Like many refugees to Canada, Christine Kayisanabo, could hardly wait to get a job and start earning her own money.

Kayisanabo came to Ontario from Rwanda in 2010, in the middle of January, greeted by snow and cold.

"But I like snow," said Kayisanabo who is now settled in Ottawa and now works full time at The Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre a long-term care facility for the elderly, including military veterans.

After a year of English classes, she started taking an evening course to become a personal service worker aiding nursing staff and helping patients bathe, dress and eat.

For Kayisanabo, however, it's been a long journey from a homeland torn apart by civil war to a new life in Canada. She said she lost eight members of her family in Rwanda's violent genocide. An aunt in Brampton sponsored her move to Canada.

"Why I came? I have two reasons, trauma and security. Trauma, because I lost a lot of members of my family, my parents, sisters, brothers, a son of four years. It was very sad," said Kayisanabo. "And security, because the killer was free."

Kayisanabo is still very much on her own as her five grown children remain in Rwanda, but she hopes someday, they'll be able to join her.

Once her training as a personal support worker was complete, she decided to volunteer at the Perley and Rideau where she eventually was hired.

"In my culture, we respect old people, we like the old people," said Kayisanabo. "I compare the old people with a dictionary. They know many things."

Barbara Wilson, a supervisor at the Perley Rideau said the health centre hires people from far and wide so it's easy for people like Kayisanabo from a different culture and still learning English to fit in.

"She was the kind of person we were looking for," said Wilson who immigrated to Canada from Jamaica. "She's good with the residents, she's very thorough, has a lot of commitment. We're proud to have her here as a member of staff."

Akos Hoffer, CEO of The Perley and Rideau Veteran's Health Centre, is also a refugee who came as a child from Hungary. He's among nine former refugees who work at the centre, where 48 languages are currently spoken by residents or staff.

"We provide a safe haven for veterans and civilians when they're most vulnerable and Canada provides a safe haven for refugees," said Hoffer.

"When you get people who have been refugees and people who have been in conflict in a safe place together, they're probably pretty comfortable with one another."

I disagree.....

And so do many other Canadians as I have been hearing. Refugees and Immigrants have different criteria when entering Canada. I have no problem with others coming to country if they contribute and don't try to change Canada or Canadians.

I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT OUR SOLDIERS IN BORDEN HAVE BEEN DISPLACED/RELOCATED TO BLACKDOWN SO THE REFUGEES CAN HAVE THE BARRACKS!!!!!! ARGGGHHH WTF........THIS IS NOT RIGHT NOR IS IT FAIR.....THESE PEOPLE HAVE DONE ABSOLUTELY SQUAT FOR CANADA AND OUR SOLDIERS ARE DOWN GRADED BECAUSE OF THEM.

TRUDEAU ERRED IF HE BELIEVES CANADIANS ARE STANDING WITH OPEN ARMS!
WE HAVE VETS, SENIORS, HOMELESS.....AND HUNGRY CHILDREN THAT NEED HELP, BUT INSTEAD HE USED HIS MAGIC WANT AND CAME UP WITH MILLIONS TO THROW IN THE AIR SO HE CAN GRAND=STAND TO THE WORLD AND SHOW-OFF.

MAN I AM TICKED AT THIS B.S.

Well maybe they are compensating the members who have been put out. They may have stopped collecting room and board from their pay while this is going on. But at least they have barracks for single members. Here in Halifax, you are forced to find your own accommodation. I don't even think that they are allowed to live onboard anymore, if posted to one of the ships. Even married quarters are extremely limited, having sold off probably 75%, or more, of PMQ's in the city.

I conquer with you Riddick, take care of Canadians first!
I helped the Kosovo refugees while I served. Now they live on the same street as me and drive big fancy rigs. I worked hard all my life and I am a (Real Canadian) and I see what the Kosovo refugees have and wonder to myself how do they have so much in so little time.
I am happy they have what I have, but many everyday Canadians don't.

Well! it is almost time to Bombard the MVA's office with complaints!
DETAILS! WE WANT DETAILS!
You can make all this other stuff happen and provide sufficient updates as to what is happening, but it is okay to leave veterans in the dark.
I do not think so! Facebook here I come! MVA and PMT you'll get the message sooner then later unlike us poor saps.

Just blowing steam!
Tired of all the head games and McDonald's like assembly line treatment that injured veterans have to go through.

Ya.....blowing steam Danny, I hear you.....it is very frustrating to be left in the dark. I am not afraid to put pen to paper.....but I am going to wait till the end of January there a bouts before I start displaying my discontent. The MVA or any politician should know the importance of communication and timing. All we have heard is how vets deserve better and more and that's it.......pretty sad.......but we are coming up to Christmas and I am sure many VAC staff want to clear their queues and clean their plates before Christmas.......but after Christmas/New Years holidays..... fair game.....get down to business and do want has been promised.......so easily they are distracted with these refugees over Canadian issues.

Rex.....

I am not even positive the guys in Borden have been displaced....it is what I have heard. Notwithstanding.......if it is true, I highly doubt these guys were given a choice......compensated or not......just not right to me.

I heard/seen on the news about a week ago that they were getting Blackdown ready for the refugees.....???

These refugees are going to need assistance.....financial help etc......

If my children had their bellies filled and a warm bed ......clothes.....I would encourage and show them we should help others worse off than us.....but......if money was very short.... be it medical commitments...low income......not much food on the table......got to turn the heat way down at night time....that to me is a different story......give ....when you can.....I have been raised that way like most Canadians........but these visitors are being at the front of the line over others who have called Canada their home all their lives!! and need help too!

In my city 7 mental health beds are being closed at the hospital because of a 700000 dollar shortfall . I'm never against helping people but this time we have to start helping Canadians and no party, not even the Cons who cut like a barber, have helped! The disabled in this country, especially the developmental disabilied are treated worse than federal prisoners , it's a shame and needs fixing before we throw billions to foreign people just to please some rich Arab countries who could take these refugees in but choose to nothing.

Yes here is who is to blame for the situation in canada past dictator governments, legion, churches, privrate rich citizens etc wasting money on crap like statues instead of building what is needed for the living. Danny they are set up by their religious facilitys which don't have to pay tax they pay interest to the church not to the banks that is how they get set up in buisness. They look after each other Canadians and Canada has forgot how to look after it's own it is a me me me country now just watch the news people just don't care.

Speaking of federal inmates, I worked 9 years with federal inmates. I and other veterans worked at a CSC making barley just over minimum wage.
At on point, I shit you not "we were having to jump up and open the door for these guys".
Third class citizen injured by service and tossed out to the wolves.
Wondering why I am pissed?

Well said Wild thing....it's for sure not their fault...if I may add this where during the election the Canadian people in general were adamant in stating that more had to be done for those refugees an done fast....so the Liberals are doing what was asked by the majority of Canadians.
Refugees from Syria are in a bad way...real bad way an these refugees would take jobs that most Canadians won't....they will work in the worst conditions for very little money.
If the situation was reversed , I would want a Country to help me out , that's another way of looking at it for me anyway.

my 2 cents

no problem with the refugees if much poorer countries are taking hundreds of thousands to a million plus I think we can do the far less proportionate 25000.

I helped with the Kosovo thing on the other end then on this end that plan was well done the same plan the GOC looked like they were doing with this crew until the Paris attacks .

now its worse .

the difference we took the Kosovo as refugees only and allowed them to apply for citizenship .

some stayed most eventually went home .

but between the Paris attacks and politicians screaming about the security issue well ...... now here we are .

expect most of these guys to stay .

Enjoyed seeing the refugee children smiling and laughing never seen that when they were in the refugee camps. Just like to see people happy especially children it is therapy. Remember everyone only has one life and it should not be in a war zone or refugee camp. 10 years of harper dictatorship has sucked the Canadian out of Canadians, feels good to get it back. Wish the politicians would realize that veterans feel like refugees in a war zone and stop bringing out the worst in us.
