A Maple Leaf stone memorial will be dedicated next Sunday at 1pm

If you've been by the Port Elgin Cenotaph that last few months, you may have noticed a new addition to the grounds, in the shape of a Maple Leaf.

A new red stone memorial sits just to the right of the main cenotaph, a tribute to our Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces who have served and continue to serve since the great wars.

Mike Atkinson, Chair of the Cenotaph Park Perpetual Care Committee, tells Bayshore Broadcasting News why they decided to install another memorial.

"A lot of people wanted to have something there to recognize the modern day soldiers as well," says Atkinson. "Those who have sacrificed and those who are still serving, so that was where the idea came from and we tossed around for a while to get the right wording for the inscription and what you see is what we've got today."

A special Dedication Ceremony is set to take place on Sunday, August, 20th at 1:00pm in Cenotaph Park.

The event is open to the public, all are welcome to attend and support our veterans.

The cost of the new memorial comes in at roughly $10,000 and was paid for entirely through donations and volunteer money.
