A London woman is accused of fraud over payment of more than $26,000 in veteran survivor benefits to someone who had died.

The financial crime unit of the RCMP London detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police started an investigation in November 2016 in response to a complaint from Veterans Affairs Canada.

Department officials said someone collected veteran survivor benefits for 14 months after a woman who was supposed to receive them had died.

The daughter of the woman failed to notify the department about her mother's death and continued to collect more than $26,000 from the government agency, the RCMP said.

After an eight-month RCMP investigation, Terrill Anne Brooke, 61, of London was charged with fraud over $5,000. She is scheduled to appear Monday in a London court.

"The RCMP respects the valued sacrifices veterans and their families have made for Canadians and is committed to protecting the integrity of the institutions appointed to care for them. This investigation highlights that fraud, as a crime, knows no boundaries," said Insp. Joe Czenze of the RCMP's London financial crime unit.
